Happy Founders Day!

January 27th marks the day that Kappa Alpha Theta was established as the first Greek letter fraternity known among women. Today, we look back on our history and admire our founders for creating a sisterhood that has done so much good in the 144 years since its establishment. We therefore wish a Happy Founders Day to all of our sisters around the world and look forward to many more centuries of sisterhood, faith, hope, and love!

Theta Spotlight : Olivia Newport

Name: Olivia Newport                                                                 Year: Sophomore                                                                     Our Theta Spotlight is shining on sophomore Olivia Newport. Olivia is the current Awards Director for our chapter. Her job is an important one. She is responsible for compiling the applications so that our chapter can be recognized at the biannual Theta National Convention in Orlando this year, in addition to other awards our chapter qualifies for. Olivia keeps track of all the wonderful thing our chapter does. With so much going on, it's so easy for something to go unnoticed! Therefore, Olivia plays a huge part in making sure other chapters across the country hear about us and the wonderful work we do. This winter break she has been working hard with the other officers to complete the applications and stay up to date on what her sisters are up to. The Gamma Mu chapter is so lucky to have such a dedicated sister as our Awards Director and can't wait to see what happens Grand Convention this year!

Helping Honduras

This winter break, some Thetas decided to spend their time helping the less fortunate in Honduras. Laura Breslau, Laura Mittleman, Steph Marrie, Claire Belz, Sarah Perry, and Brianna Ali all traveled to Central America to build a school and assist the surrounding community. Our Thetas mixed cement, played with local children, and grew an understanding of how lucky we are to live in America with luxuries most of these children will never know. In the small village of Democracia our sisters made an impact and in turn were taught so much by the constant energy and optimism these children possess every day. We are so proud of the Thetas that spent their vacation doing something to improve the world and are inspired by their dedication to helping others.

Theta Spotlight : Abbey Weit

Name: Abbey Weit
Year: Junior
Our very first Theta Spotlight is shining on junior Abbey Weit and the coat drive she ran this winter. This Thanksgiving Abbey and her family went to the Light House Shelter in Annapolis to drop off a Thanksgiving meal for the less fortunate. However, Abbey soon discovered that the shelter had been given little by the surrounding community to donate to the needy. So she came up with the idea of a coat drive sponsored by the UMD Greek community. Knowing how fortunate all of us are to be a part of such an amazing group of women, Abbey was certain that we would be willing to help her reach her goal. By the end of the coat drive, Abbey was able to donate 20 coats, blankets, and gloves to the Light House Shelter. Even with all the hard work that went in to running the drive, Abbey never complained. According to her, the smile on the faces of those that ran the shelter was more than enough to make organizing the drive worth it.

Globetrotting KAΘs

Although Maryland Theta's still have a few weeks until class begins, many of our sisters are already beginning their studies all across the world! This semester, eleven sisters are studying abroad and experiencing worlds very different from that of College Park. We can't wait to hear about all the amazing things they will do and see!

Some of our sisters are taking on Europe! Others are adventuring down under in Australia. Still others are experiencing all Africa has to offer! To see where each Theta is currently exploring, click on the markers on the map below!
